Meet Niklas Malmström – production scheduler

Niklas Malmström

From restaurant kitchens to steel production, Niklas Malmström has taken an unconventional path. With nearly two decades of experience in the steel industry, he is now a key part of production planning at Stegra.

Niklas was born and raised in Luleå, Sweden, and moved to Sävast in Boden just over 19 years ago – more or less by chance. He began his career as a trained chef, working for nearly a decade across Sweden and Europe. Eventually, he chose a different path. Shortly after moving to Boden, he entered the steel industry, a decision that would shape his career going forward.

Over the years, he has worked across several areas of production, including ladle handling, where he spent ten years as a ladle and crane operator. He has also taken on various roles in smaller projects, including supervisory positions. For the past eight years, he has focused on production planning.

Three quick questions Niklas!

What does the role of a production scheduler involve?

– I’m responsible for planning production in the hot end of the process. That means ensuring the right slabs and coils are produced at the right time, with a strong focus on safety, quality and efficiency, while adapting to customer needs depending on the steel grade.

Why Stegra?

– As soon as I heard about Stegra and the overall project, I knew I wanted to join. The opportunity to be part of such a major transformation in the steel industry was very appealing. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I applied as soon as I saw the job opening.

What’s the best part of your job?

– I get to build my role from the ground up, which is both exciting and challenging. I’m learning something new every day. But more than anything, it’s the people. Getting to work with such talented, knowledgeable, and driven colleagues from all over the world – everyone moving in the same direction – is very rewarding. I feel proud and grateful to be part of this journey.
